Laurel County Backpack Program Continues

Sixteen schools in the Laurel County School District depended on Backpack Club to feed kids on the weekends for 14 years.When that journey, started by Stacy Sheppard, came to a close, Jennifer Hawkins felt it was too important to let slip through the cracks.Scrolling through Facebook, she said she felt God sent her a sign.”I know it’s kind of silly and funny,” Hawkins said. “[But] her post on Facebook had the end date as my birth date … and I felt like God was opening that door for me to step in and keep it going.”So now she is revamping it to the “Backpack Program” with the help of the community.
