A Discussion On Chronic Wasting Disease
A biologist from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife came to the Perry County Public library on Thursday to teach a class on Chronic Wasting Disease.Similar to Mad Cow Disease, Chronic Wasting Disease is found in the brain of elk and deer when abnormal proteins are present.There are currently no cases of the disease reported in Kentucky, but it has been detected in surrounding states Tennessee, West Virginia, Ohio, Virginia and Illinois. There is no known cure.According to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, deer and elk hunting in Kentucky contributes an estimated $550 million towards the state’s economy.
