Governor Signs Bill Helping Midwives

A new law will license midwives here in Kentucky. Gov. Matt Bevin signed the bill into law in an effort to help mothers.While being a midwife was never illegal, the industry has not been regulated since 1975.This means anyone could call themselves a midwife.Senate Bill 84 lays out a framework for home birth and equips certified professional midwives with a license.Advocates hope the new law will improve relationships between doctors and midwives and ultimately benefit future moms.The goal is to start issuing licenses by summer 2020.
