KY Changing High School Graduation Requirements

Kentucky’s education commissioner has changed a proposal for new high school graduation requirements after getting feedback from districts.Wayne Lewis said Monday students will still have to demonstrate basic proficiency in reading and math. But students will not be required to meet standards showing they are ready for college or a career. Instead, the state will require students to meet one of seven “qualifiers” that are not as strict as the previous proposal.Lewis called the revised proposal a “step back” but said it was necessary because some districts would not have the ability to offer students all of the ways to meet the requirements. The state Board of Education is scheduled to vote on the new requirements tomorrow.
