St. Lawrence Schools Leaders Urge Tax Increase Passage
District leaders in Lawrence County Schools are hoping voters will pass a nickel tax when they head to the polls in November. It’s a measure the district’s board of education approved in Feb. 2017, but because of enough signatures on a petition opposing the tax, it was recalled. The recall means the only way it can pass is if it gets enough “yes” votes. It would add an additional five cents per hundred dollars of valuation to property tax bills. For a homeowner with a house valued at $100,000, it would cost an extra $50 a year. The money raised would be used to rebuild Louisa West Elementary School, as well as upgrades to other schools.
